Joined ICES Kandy in 2002 as an Associate Director. He played a leadership role in the Centre both in research as well as in programming and administration. Before joining ICES Mr Mendis held several senior managerial and executive positions in the private sector including that of Director General of the Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka. Mr Mendis graduated from the University of Peradeniya with a BA in Economics Summa Cum Laude. Later he qualified as an Attorney-at-Law and practiced in the Kandy Bar as a criminal lawyer. He gave up his law practice to join ICES and return to a career of research. One of his current projects is writing a book on the economic history of Sri Lanka. He edited a special issue of the ICES journal Ethnic Studies Report on “Electoral Process in South Asia: Statutory Framework and Institutional Arrangements.”
