A
Joint Project by
The International Centre for Ethnic Studies and The
British Council Colombo
The
Proposed Arts Festival
We
propose to run a mini-arts festival alongside the conference
proper. The aim will be to highlight new artistic creations
by South Asians- be they from the Region or beyond it.
Before, during and after the conference, we plan to
organise a number of exhibitions, screenings, performances
highlighting new South Asian Artists and artistic trends.
Evening
Events (screenings/performances)
A
play performed by a theatre company in the Region along
with screenings of films by new filmmakers of the Region.
These events will be open to the public.
Workshops
Workshops
could be conducted by artists/ academics - either participants
of the conference or otherwise. These workshops would
be open to the public (a limited number).
Exhibitions
Art/Sculpture/Photography/cartoon
exhibitions can be run concurrently with the conference,
when possible at the conference site itself. Here again,
the focus would be on cutting edge work from the region.
Book
Exhibitions
Since
circulation and publication is one of the biggest obstacles
of creative communication and interaction within the
Region, we will use this opportunity to focus on South
Asian publishers and publishing possibilities. Publishers
of the region will be invited to exhibit their books
during the conference.
Outcome of the Conference and Arts Festival
Through
this conference cum festival, the International Centre
for Ethnic Studies and the British Council Colombo hopes
to achieve the following:
- The
introducing of new writers
This conference aims to re-assess established South
Asian literary figures, while at the same time introduce
some lesser-known writers from the Region.
- The Introducing of new critics
Through this conference we will be able to tap into
not only new creative talent, but also new South
Asian critics both within and without the Region.
- Publication of academic/creative work presented
at the conference
There will be a conference publication which will
include not only academic work, but also hitherto
unpublished creative work.
- Regional
Initiatives
One of the issues to be discussed at the conference
will be the feasibility of continuing regional co-operation
through Regional Art Journals and future Regional
Festivals.
