Comparative Electoral Process in South Asia

This project was implemented with an overall objective of helping to ensure free and fair elections in South Asian countries. It was designed to follow up and feedback on the Colombo '95 Workshop. The second workshop took place in February, 1999 in Kathmandu. The objectives of this workshop were fivefold:

  • Preparation of country papers highlighting the status and mode of existing electoral mechanisms and their functioning in a regional framework, and their role in democratisation and national development.
  • Development of a comprehensive issue profile on electoral reform in a comparative regional perspective based on the five country papers
  • Formulation of a body of suggestions and recommendations specifying the electoral policies, objectives, and strategies deemed essential for the resolution of the issues and problems identified in 2
  • Identification of the framework for a more effective and efficient mechanism of electoral monitoring and observation based on the experiences and feedback from the past.
  • Publication of the results of the workshop proceeding
