Researchers
This multi-pronged and multi-layered study will draw upon the research and analytical skills of a multi-disciplinary group of scholars located in different institutions and countries. The entire project will be coordinated by Dr Malathi de Alwis (Principal Coordinator), a Socio-cultural Anthropologist at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo who will also be the Sri Lanka Country Coordinator working in association with Dr Pradeep Jeganathan, another Socio-Cultural Anthropologist at ICES who will be researching psycho-social interventions; Dr Jennifer Hyndman, a Human Geographer at Simon Fraser University, Canada who will be researching the impact of foreign aid in Sri Lanka as well as Indonesia; Dr. Vivian Choi from USA and Sunil Bastian, economist and development consultant at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo who will coordinate the writing of several policy briefs and also liase with the international donor community and government ministries.
The Indonesian component of the research will be coordinated by Dr Eva-Lotta Hedman, a Political Scientist at the Centre for Refugee Studies, Oxford. who will be working in conjunction with Acehnese colleagues such as Dr Jacqueline Saipno, Dr. Saiful Mahdi and Dr. Riwanto Tirtosudarmo.
The Principal Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination of the research and analysis which will take place in Indonesia and Sri Lanka over the course of two years. She will monitor a listhost where all logistical, conceptual, and analytical issues regarding the project will be discussed by all the researchers, liase with the disbursing institution, ICES, and also with the two country coordinators and make sure all the bench marks are followed. She will plan the two 4-day conferences with the support of the two hosting institutions, Aceh Institute in Banda Aceh and ICES in Colombo. She will also guest edit a special issue of Domains which will carry articles based on the research conducted, and also coordinate the writing of policy briefs and workshops with policy makers and donors.
The Country Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination of all the research and analysis specific to each country. This would include regular visits to all the field sites and stayin in constant contact with the researchers, liasing with the Principal Coordinator and making sure the researchers fulfil all their bench marked obligations prior to their receiving payment. Consulting with the Principal Coordinator regarding the research analysis and writing up process as well as the planning of two conferences and workshops with policy makers and donors.
