Opportunities at the ICES
Internship/ Fellowship opportunities at the ICES

Internship/ Fellowship opportunities are available at the ICES for 6 - 12 months duration for university students who are preparing for their Masters/PhD Programmes.

Following are the six main research areas of the Centre:

1. Ethnicity & Identity
2. Justice & Peace
3. Gender & Sexuality
4. State, Politics & Power
5. Globalization from Southern Prospective
6. Arts, Media & Culture

Selected applicants will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Researcher or the relevant project coordinator.

Applicants are expected to self finance their air fare, accommodation, transportation and any related living expenses. ICES will assist the interns in finding accommodation in close proximity to the Centre

Research and Programme Coordinators

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) engages in interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical research, policy dialogue, media and creative arts programmes focused on the areas of: ethnicity and conflict; human rights; gender and development. Established with the support of Ford Foundation in 1982, ICES has United Nations ECOSOC consultative status and an active national, regional and international programme.

As it as cross its 25th year, ICES seeks to recruit 2-4 talented, dynamic individuals to join its multi-ethnic, multi-national staff, to prepare for a new generation of innovative research and programme activities.

The ideal candidates would possess:

  • Advanced (postgraduate) Social Science degree (Political Science/IR/Law/Social Anthropology/Economics)
  • Interest and background in interdisciplinary and policy-related research.
  • Minimum two-four years’ experience in research and/or programme coordination in a recognized institution.
  • Familiarity with and sensitivity to national and international political issues in ICES’ four programme areas
  • Experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including familiarity with the use of field-based surveys, and supervision of multiple site field research, highly desirable
  • Strong writing skills essential. Documented history of research publications would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Sinhala and/or Tamil will be an advantage.
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Entrepreneurial and communication skills sought.
  • Commitment towards working on a project for a minimum two year period with opportunity for further career enhancement at the end of the project.
  • Good interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team is required.
