Mission to Bangladesh, Nepal and India on the issue of trafficking
of women and girls (28 October-15 November 2000)

At the invitation of the Governments of Bangladesh, Nepal and India, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences visited Dhaka, Kathmandu, Bhairahwa in Rupandehi district, Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta from 28 October to 15 November 2000, to study the issue of trafficking in women and girls in the region.

Mission to Pakistan and Afghanistan (1-13 September 1999)

At the invitation of the Governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, visited Pakistan and Afghanistan from 1 to 13 September 1999 to study the issue of violence against Afghan women. In Afghanistan, the Special Rapporteur visited Faizabad on 7 September 1999 and Kabul from 9 to 11 September 1999. She had also requested access to Mazar-e-Sharif, but owing to a misunderstanding it was not possible for the visit to take place. In Pakistan, the Special Rapporteur visited Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore and her assistant also visited Quetta to meet with Afghan refugees on her behalf. She met with Taliban officials, government of Pakistan officials, NGOs, women victims and members of the international community.

Report on the mission to Haiti ( 14th June -17 June 1999)

In follow-up to Commission on Human Rights resolution 1999/77, entitled "Situation of human rights in Haiti", in which the Commission reiterated its call to the Special Rapporteur on violence against women to consider favourably the invitation by the Government of Haiti to visit the country, the Special Rapporteur visited Haiti from 14 to 17 June 1999. The Special Rapporteur's fact-finding focused on the situation of violence against women in Haiti and the available response mechanisms, including the law enforcement and judicial institutions, and on the political rape committed against women during the military regime from 1991 to 1994, in particular.

Report on the mission to Cuba ( 7 June to 12 June 1999)

At the invitation of the Government of Cuba in a letter dated 17 August 1998, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women visited Cuba from 7 to 12 June 1999 to study the situation of violence against women and its causes and consequences.

The Special Rapporteur was fully aware of the importance of her visit to Cuba since the invitation extended to her was the first extended to any United Nations human rights mechanism by the Government.

Report of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences: Mission to Indonesia and East Timor - (20 November to 4 December 1998)

At the invitation of the Government of Indonesia, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, visited Indonesia from 20 November to 4 December 1998 to study the issue of violence against women as perpetrated or condoned by the State. The Special Rapporteur also visited Dili, East Timor from 30 November to 2 December 1998. She had requested access to Irian Jaya and Aceh; however, the Government denied access on the grounds that there was insufficient time
In Jakarta and Dili the Special Rapporteur focused on gathering information, mainly on: (a) violence against women during the May riots; (b) violence against women in East Timor, Irian Jaya and Aceh.

Report of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences: Mission to the United States of America - (31 st May -18th June 1998)

At the invitation of the Government of the United States of America, transmitted by letter dated 15 May 1998, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences visited Washington D.C. and the States of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Georgia, California, Michigan and Minnesota from 31 May to 18 June 1998 to study the issue of violence against women in the state and federal prisons in each of the states mentioned

The present report is intended as a case-study to complement the Special Rapporteur's previous report on violence against women perpetrated and/or condoned by the State, presented to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-fourth session (E/CN.4/1998/54). The Special Rapporteur chose the United States of America because of serious allegations of sexual misconduct by male corrections officers in United States prisons which had been received, and also because of the several existing programmes and activities, both at federal and state levels, to prevent and combat violence in women's prisons. It is from the practical experience of such initiatives that the Special Rapporteur hoped to gain a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of violence against women in prisons and detention facilities and of the effective measures to eliminate such violence. The Special Rapporteur also studied issues concerning access to health care and parenting/family programmes for incarcerated women and sought to evaluate positive initiatives undertaken by prison authorities to address the issues of violence against women in prisons

Report of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women. Mission to Rwanda on the issue in situations of armed conflict ( 27th Sep. to 1st November 1997)

At the invitation of the Government of Rwanda, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women visited Kigali, Ntarama, Butare, Gikongoro, Gitarama and Taba in Rwanda from 27 September to 1 November 1997 to study the issue of violence against women in wartime and in post-conflict situations. The Special Rapporteur also visited the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, from 23 to 25 September 1997

In Rwanda, the Special Rapporteur focused on gathering information mainly on the following issues:

  • Violence against women during the genocide;
  • The status of women post-genocide;
  • Progress achieved in punishing perpetrators at the national and international levels;
  • Conditions of women in detention.

Report of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women: mision to to South Africa on the issue of rape in the community (11 to 18 October 1996)

At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of South Africa, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences visited Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa from 11 to 18 October 1996, to study the issue of rape in the community

Report of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women: mission to Brazil on the issue of domestic violence ( 15 to 26 July 1996)

At the invitation of the Government of Brazil, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences visited Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Campinas and Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 15 to 26 July 1996, to study in depth the issue of domestic violence against women. The present report is intended as a case-study to complement the Special Rapporteur's previous report on violence against women in the family, presented to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-second session (E/CN.4/1996/53 and Add.2).

Report on the mission of the Special Rapporteur to Poland on the issue of trafficking and forced prostitution of women (24 May to 1 June 1996)

At the invitation of the Government of Poland, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women visited Warsaw and Szczecin in Poland from 24 May to 1 June 1996, to study in depth the issue of trafficking and forced prostitution of women as one aspect of violence against women, its causes and consequences.

Report on the mission to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the issue of military sexual slavery in wartime (18 July - m27 July 1995)

At the invitation of the Governments of the Republic of Korea and Japan, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women visited Seoul from 18 to 22 July 1995 and Tokyo from 22 to 27 July 1995 to study in depth the issue of military sexual slavery in wartime, within the wider framework of violence against women, its causes and consequences.
